In our desire to enable the Credit Union to expand its membership and provide services to other city organizations, Boards of Education, hospitals, health organization and non-profit agencies beyond the City of Newark, the Credit Union sought and received the approval from the State Department of Banking and Insurance to do so.
In addition to Newark, the cities that the Credit Union is now authorized to represent are: East Orange, Irvington, Maplewood, Orange and South Orange. This change will allow the Credit Union to support a greater diversity of members while providing a path to continuous growth and strength for the Credit Union and all its members.
As a result of the State’s approval, the name of our Credit Union must change to accurately reflect the cities that we represent. So sometime between January 2023 and March 2023 the new name for the Newark Board of Education Credit Union (NBEECU) will be changed to the UNITED CITIES CREDIT UNION (UCCU). Although the name will be changed, we can and will never forget that the NBEECU was “born” in Newark and has remained strong through the years. It was because of that strength that the State evaluated our request to expand to other cites and did not hesitate to give us their approval.
